Best Makeup for Acne Prone Skin

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, acne is the most common skin concern affecting up to 50 million Americans yearly.  With a large percentage of those affected being women, it can often prove difficult to understand the best makeup practices, or even the right products, to choose for acne-prone sensitive skin.  Our team at Mirabella is here to help with a breakdown of makeup tips and the best cosmetics for acne-prone skin!

UNDERSTANDING ACNE

Before we can look directly at cosmetics, it is first crucial to truly be aware of what acne is, what causes it and how to prevent further breakouts and irritation of the skin.  Acne is a common skin condition that develops when hair follicles below the skin's surface get clogged.  Sebum, the oil that aids in keeping skin from drying out, combined with dead skin cells plug the pores which leads to outbreaks of lesions, most often referred to as pimples or zits.

During the onset of acne, those affected typically try to dry the skin out to combat the irritation, not realizing that the over-production of sebum caused the breakout initially resulting in further inflammation and build-up of bacteria.

HOW TO PUT AN END TO ACNE

To prevent acne and skin irritation, it is key to keep natural sebum flowing freely out of the hair follicles to minimize impaction.  While it may sound technical, this can be achieved relatively easily with the right balance of products to the cleanse skin and replenish moisture.  Luckily, Mirabella's team of skilled in-house estheticians and makeup artists is here to help take the guesswork out of picking the best cosmetics to use and even improve skin.

SKINCARE & MAKEUP THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE - WHY MIRABELLA?

Flawless makeup application begins with a clean face regardless of the skin's condition - what many professional makeup artists like to call a fresh canvas.  Mirabella's Balance Alcohol-Free Toner is another incredible skincare product for acne-prone skin.  This face toner moisturizes, cleanses, and tones with a gentle, soothing formula that works to restore balance to the skin while maintaining natural moisture levels.

Addtionally, Mirabella's new Replenish & Restore Multi-Peptide Serum is a phenomenal skincare product for acne-prone skin with its antioxidant-rich formula that combats hyperpigmentation, inhibits glycation, reduces redness and even helps to improve acne.

And, while we here at team Mirabella pride ourselves on the quality of in-house experts we are lucky enough to have on our team, we also know that sometimes an outside perspective carries even more weight.  To comment in detail on Mirabella's Invincible Anti Aging Hd Foundation and its effects on acne-prone skin - we'd like to introduce Dru Pattan LE, Esthetician & Acne Specialist, owner of Skin & Bare It, and Mirabella retailer/advocate.

"I have incredibly acne-prone skin myself and as such can relate to how much of a struggle it can be to find decent makeup. Not only do you have to find something that isn't going to break you out, but you have to find the perfect mix of something that isn't going to highlight any existing breakouts, something that looks as good at the end of the day as it did in the beginning of the day, and if you are like me, then it absolutely has to benefit the skin, not just cover it. I like my makeup to be part of my skincare regimen, not something I have to actively reverse the damage from at the end of each day.

As many of you can attest to since you have seen my skin freak out on several occasions, I try everything, and it doesn't always work out. I have been using Mirabella HD anti-aging foundation for years now. It was the first liquid foundation I had ever finished an entire bottle of and happily went back for more… and more and more.

SO WHAT MAKES IT SO DIFFERENT?

While it can definitely be applied as a full coverage foundation, you can also achieve a lighter coverage and due to its hydrating, protecting and anti aging properties, it can act as a BB Cream as opposed to a full coverage foundation. This means I am able to use this daily as part of my skincare regimen while also using it on special occasions for a completely different, more polished look. I add half a pump to my Bare Skin Smooth Mineral Tint or Bare Skin Non Tinted Zinc to achieve the lighter BB cream look and feel.

Those ingredients!!!! The specific peptides this product contains are amazing!!! Both are highly anti aging but one has specific actions to help fight inflammation making it not only acne safe but beneficial for acne prone skin as well as skin battling any other form of inflammatory condition... considering that simply the process of aging is inflammatory- that is all of us.

A couple of observations -

people with dry skin tend to not like this product and claim it doesn’t sit right on their skin- which is often the case with dry skin as those skin cells being dehydrated without a healthy lipid bilayer will contribute to uneven application, so fix your barrier first, hydrate the skin adequately and then use.

I LOVE using both the hydrating essence and peptide serum or peptide finisher to prep my skin for makeup.

I definitely am not a full coverage person and adding half a pump to my SPF is more than sufficient. This is also much more forgiving if your skin is on the dry side.

I love keeping more than just my one shade on hand and I use their lightest shade under my eyes to brighten and their darkest shade to contour. It sure beats trying to find separate acne safe products.

In addition to their amazing foundation, Mirabella also has a great moisturizer and a brush spray to help keep your tools clean. While I wouldn’t use the spray as a substitute for fully cleaning your brush, it works great as an in between to help extend the times between those cleanings."
